A HORSE WITH NO NAME – Guitar Lesson

Traces of Neil Young! Four simple but effective chords and you won't need to move your hand. But if everyone doesn't sing along, I'll be shocked . La la ….. la la la la la la ….. la la la! Proving once again that less is often more …. here's your A Horse With No Name guitar lesson!

  Em D9/6
On the  first part of the  journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

  Em9 Dmaj9
I've  been through the desert on a  horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la …

  Em D9/6
After t wo days in the des ert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

  Em9 Dmaj9
You s ee I've been through the desert on a  horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la …

  Em D9/6
After  nine days I let the  horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

  Em9 Dmaj9
You see I've  been through the desert on a  horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la …

Excellent rendition. I learned this song "back in the day" but in Am & F#m. The La LA part had and Am, Em, Dmaj then back to Am.
I'v been playing guitar since I can remember but I quit for a long long time and now, at 61 years old, getting back into it. Being a child of the 60's your lessons are right up my alley. I use to play most of the songs you get into but over the years I've lost a lot of the timing and cords. They way you do your lessons gives me the opportunity to play along and that really helps with the timing not to mention cord recollection. Thanks for your hard work. It really is helping me out!

Great lesson!  Looking forward to more.  On this one, how are you doing the "slap"?  Are you just wacking the strings with the edge of your palm? Or picking and quickly muting?

Reply

admin February 8, 2013 at 9:15 AM

Based on your wording Jeff … I would say picking and muting. Thanks and welcome!

Dear Jackson,
I have been playing songs for quite sometime now, but I have always seemed to have problems with my correct strumming patterns, I keep good rhythm, but have issues determining the correct patterns to you. You have vastly helped me with this, and I am learning new songs very quickly now, I have quite a number of open and barre chords under my belt and new chords seem to come easy to me.
I have been quiet until now but, I thought you should know how you have affected my guitar knowledge. I am no longer stuck in rut any more, and the new songs are coming quickly which is bringing back the excitement again.
Lastly, how did you accomplish finding the correct patterns, by ear?  Sorry about such a long email but I just wanted to tell you The "Thrill is Back" for me, and I so appreciate it. I truly do!
Yours Truly,                                                                                                                 An Ardent Fan
